CRASH Cards Information

CRASH Card is a programme in which motorcyclists place a card inside their crash helmet as a medic alert. The details which the rider has written on the card provide vital information for attending ambulance crews if the motorcyclist is injured in a road traffic collision. Saving valuable time and helping treatment especially if the rider is either unconscious or unable to communicate.

This scheme, which has been in use since March 2009 in some parts of England is available nationally through local road safety partnerships, air ambulances, fire and rescue services, selected commercial outlets and some Police Bikesafe. Ambulance Services across the UK endorse the scheme.

CRASH Card was created by the committee of the Ambulance Motorcycle Club a group of experienced Paramedics and ambulance staff who are passionate about motorcycling. Over 2 million of the free “CRASH Cards” are in circulation across the UK, America, Australia, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Northern Ireland, Eire, Portugal, Romania and a small number in France.

The card also has a mnemonic “CRASH” which gives helpful advice if a rider comes across a road traffic collision. It is accepted that motorcyclists are more likely than any other road user to stop at the scene of an accident and offer to help. CRASH is an excellent way of helping the emergency services. The rider who stops to help uses their own card, leaving the injured riders CRASH Card safely inside the injured rider’s helmet. CRASH as a mnemonic focuses on the safety of those first on scene to an RTC and prompts the helpful and uninjured motorcyclist to gather the information from the scene needed to get the right emergency services resources to the scene as quickly as possible.

The CRASH card is accompanied by an explanatory letter or card which contains a self adhesive green dot. The letter or card explains that riders should affix the dot to the right hand side of their helmets or visor to help alert the attending medical staff to the presence of the card.

The letter also shows how to fill out the card and explains that only trained professionals should remove an injured rider’s crash helmet.

CRASH Card is a great interaction tool which helps to break down barriers when talking to riders about clothing and advanced training. In the UK there are many anecdotal stories from A+E Paramedics who have “found a card” and how it helped them treat their patients. Cindy's story in the USA is wonderful example of the experiences also seen in the UK.

CRASH Card and Rider Alert have been funded by several commercial and public organisations and has been bestowed many accolades including: The FIM Road Safety Award 2012, The Prince Michael International Road Safety Award 2011, GEMS 10 the journal of EMS (JEMS) "EMS10" award given to the top 10 innovations in USA EMS. and the Virgina state Governors Transportation Safety Award. The Cards creator was awarded an MBE in the 2014 new years honours list.
